Top-selling French champagne
made by Champagne Louis Roederer
The champagne was first produced in 1876, under the special request of Czar Alexander II
, and presented in crystal bottles (hence the name). It remained an exclusive cuvée to the Russian Court until after World War II
, when sale to the general public began.
Today, Cristal takes its place amongst Veuve Clicquot, Perrier Jouet Fleur de France, and Dom Perignon
as a first-class champagne. Production occurs on five vinyards (including one in Anderson Valley, California
). Cost per bottle commonly runs $180-500 USD.
