, are all about excess. They wallow
in a far-too-endearing hybrid of faux angst
and genuine anguish
; they live for hilarious cheese and self-parody
; and most of all, they get down and dirty with the gothic stereotypes
that they simultaneously pay homage to, mock, and knowingly perpetuate. Typifying all these traits, Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All) was their most successful single; although never cracking #100 on the Billboard
charts, its devilish noir
video enjoyed regular MTV
rotation, and certainly broke the band to a far wider audience.
With their constantly underrated melodic sense keener than ever before, the band alternates between their trademark murky thrash
and a kind of warped All Hallow’s Boogie. Peter Steele
pushes his feral croon far beyond Bram Stoker’s
secret fantasies, gushing about how he hooked up with some kind of a wannabe vampire
. At over eleven minutes (how many charting singles can say that?) it has space for throbbingly gothic bass figures, organ breaks alternately ominous and hilariously over-the-top, and even catchy finger-snaps.
I had a big argument with a friend once, who thought Type O
were dead serious. I told her over and over that the song’s title refers to hair dye. There is no deep meaning within these lyrics, and to go on at length would be ridiculous.

After Black No. 1’s initial appearance on the album Bloody Kisses
, 1993), it crept its way onto their first single (Roadrunner Records
