The
BBC Radiophonic
Workshop was formally created in
1958 to help develop the state of
sound in
radio and
television. It developed rich
innovative sounds and
music throughout its history for many television and radio shows, but the Workshop is most famous for its work in the
Science Fiction series
Doctor Who. Besides
composing the theme music for Doctor Who, the Workshop also created the
sound effects
(such as the sounds of the
TARDIS, the
Daleks, and the
Cybermen).
The BBC has released several Audio CDs of the Workshop's music and effects, including several for Doctor Who. Due to financial cutbacks, the Workshop was merged with the Radio division in 1996-98, and today it mostly restores and catalogues music.
