From a Derrick May quote on the subject of drugs in dance music: "So the kids take a pill to feel the funk and the DJ takes a pill to feel the funk. I don't take a pill to feel the funk. Carl don't take a pill to feel the funk. Glenn Underground don't take a pill to feel the funk. Derrick Carter might take a pill for fun, but not to feel the funk." It can be found in this article:

May is definitely anti-substance. One reason he likes playing in Japan so much is that it is damn near impossible for party kids to find drugs with which to alter their musical experience. (this was in response to a question about his work for the Ghost in the Shell Megatech Body CD, during a chat session with him done by mp3.com right before the Transmat Time:Space tour WHICH I MISSED ARGH)

For what it's worth, other noted anti-drug dance music personalities include Joey Beltram, Moby, and Paul van Dyk. By a stroke of bad luck, both Beltram and Moby have created drug use anthems with their respective tracks Energy Flash (featuring a repeated "Ecstasy, ecstasy" sample) and Next is the E (you figure it out)
