The act or process of unsettling or breaking up that which has been established; specifically, the withdrawal of the support of the state from an established church; as, the disestablishment and disendowment of the Irish Church by Act of Parliament.

The removal of established religion from a nation; the ending of government privileges to one church. The process of enacting separation of church and state in a nation which formerly did not have it.

An advocate of disestablishment is a disestablishmentarian; an opponent is a theocrat as well as a (brace yourself!) antidisestablishmentarian.
