Kaypro product line, circa
1984:
- Kaypro II--64 KB RAM, 2.5 MHz Zilog Z80 processor, 2x191KB Single Sided, Double Density 5 1/4" floppy drives, integrated, 9" diagonal, 80x24 green phosphor text display, one serial port, one parallel port, all in an integrated metal case. Came with bundled software--CP/M 2.2 WordStar, Perfect Writer, Perfect Calc, Perfect Filer, The Word Plus, SBASIC, Microsoft Basic, and various games like above, for $1595. What a bargain!
- Kaypro 4--Same as above but with Double Sided, Double Density floppies and a 4 MHz CPU. I believe it was $1795.
- Kaypro 10--Like the 4, but a single DSDD floppy, and a 10 megabyte hard drive inside of it, and the screen could do 160x48 block graphics. I want to say it was $2995, but it may have been $1995--the trick was that is cost about what a 10 megabyte hard drive cost all by itself back then.
Later Kaypro came out with the
Kaypro 16 which was
IBM compatible and a few other desktops. They probably
stopped in the
early '90s, but have recently
reformed selling
run-of-the-mill PC compatibles.
My Kaypro II that I wrote all of my high school term papers on still is in my basement. Should fire it up someday.
