The greatest Roman poet, Vergil (Publius Vergilius Maro) wrote the Aeneid, the Georgics, and the Bucolics. His poetry was so good that people became convinced that he must have had magic powers, and started to practice bibliomancy using the Aeneid, a practice known as the Sors Vergiliana (plural Sortes Vergilianae). Vergil's name is often misspelled "Virgil", because it's similar to the Latin word for a magic wand.
