McGuffey's Readers were used almost in every grade school in the United States for about one hundred years. Because of an increasing secular humanist trend that developed through the 20th Century in society and also the school systems it has become the a priori, prevalent norm in this 21st Century. Today, these kinds of educational materials are mostly exclusively used in private Christian schools, and by homeschoolers.
