A
stylus is also the
needle on the
headshell of a
turntable's
tonearm. It carries the
sound frequencies
encoded in the
grooves of the
vinyl through the tonearm, to the
mixer. From there the
sound moves through the mixer to the
receiver, then finally, out through the
speakers. Hope you have decent speakers, or the stylus started this amazing chain of events for
nothing.

You want different types of stylii for different types of
music. For
house,
trance and
progressive techno, use a stylus that targets high and mid-range frequencies well. For
drum & bass, choose a stylus that picks up more of the low range frequencies.
