Dirk Kempthorne, Republican, is the governor of the State of Idaho.

Kempthorne was born on October 29, 1951, one day before my birthday (though it wasn't in the same year), in San Diego. He attended the University of Idaho and got a bachelor's degree in political science. He was elected mayor of Boise, Idaho in 1984 and served until 1991, then being elected into the Senate. His current term will expire in January 2003. His wife's name is Patricia.

Today, at the Idaho Association of Student Councils march, I got to shake his hand. I said "Hi, I'm Marc . . . and you're Dirk, right?" He smiled and then went about his business.
