Amun is the ancient Egyptian word meaning "
hidden."
Amun was an Egyptian deity who began as the local god of reproduction from Thebes, and took the form of a ram. Amun, Mut (his wife), and Khon (his son) formed what was known as the divine triad of Thebes.
Later Amun was associated with the son god Re of Heliopolis, and was called Amun Re. This new entity had the titles of father of the gods, fashioner of men, creator of cattle, and the lord of all being. Amun Re became the supreme god of the Egypt and its empire. The power of his highest preists rivaled that of the pharaoh, which caused problems resembling today's church-state conflicts.
The largest temple built in Egypt's history was for Amun Re at Al Karnak. He was worshipped in the ancient Greek colonies of Cyrene, where has identified with Zeus. In Rome, he was identified with Jupiter.
