A series of
light and
dark rings formed in a
plano-convex lens if
monochromatic light is shone onto the lens when it rests on a
plane mirror.
First observed by
Newton, they are caused by
interference between light reflected by the
mirror, and light reflected at the curved surface of the
lens.
