I can remember the summers I spent as a child selling clonaid on hot afternoons. My father would bring out an old folding card table from the garage, and I'd hurriedly make signs using purple scented markers and the backs of Old Dutch potato chip boxes. My sisters and I would sit behind our makeshift booth harassing passers-by to buy a glassful.
"Hi Mr. Batzel. Do you want to buy a glass of clonaid?"
"Hey lady! Getchyer clonaid here!
"Clonaid, only 25¢ a glass!"
Usually, we'd only sell three or four glasses -- drinks derived from illegal human clones weren't that popular in the late 1970s -- leaving us with more than ¾ of a pitcher of clonaid. Thankfully, my mother would take pity on us and buy the remaining drinks at a grossly inflated price. For some reason, I don't think she drank it; I think she poured it into one of the potted plants when we weren't looking.
