Some thoughts occured to me today about genetically augmenting your brain.

Theosophical problems aside (and technological, as you will see) this could drastically alter your brain. The first possibility is to splice silicon enzyme genes from an Archaea (someone assures me there are silicon metabolising organisms ~ I know for a fact that the enzyme has been crystallised). Although some oxygen problems remain, this would be the best route to bio-silicon neural living chips. Clearly.

The second possibility is to use optical switching. This might be slightly easier (as it were :-) but not necessarily an improvement on the existing design. The necessary genes would be: GFP(go on, look it up!) and probably some sort of opsin, as in the eye. The rest is mere detail (left as an exercise for the reader).
