Veterans of Foreign Wars is a military service organization dedicated to serving veterans who served during a war, expedition, or a campaign. Military service by itself does not qualify for membership. One must have been given a campaign medal to qualify. My qualifier was the Armed Forces Expeditionary medal I was given in the 1980's.

The organization was founded in 1899 by James C. Putnam. It's a 501(c) non-profit corporation headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri.

The VFW is dedicated to helping American veterans, especially disabled vets and their families. They provide services to assist others when dealing with the Veterans Administration. One does not have to be a member to get assistance for claims of compensation, pensions, hospitalization, and civil service employment preferences.

Many towns have VFW posts, or chapters, which assist local veterans. Some also provide weekend activities and a gathering place for folks who served in the military. I've been a lifetime member of the VFW since 1989.
