A small rodent
often kept as a pet
, latin name Octodon degus
. They somewhat resemble a large brown gerbil
. They originate in Chile
, from the lowland areas. They are social
, and it's a good idea to keep them in pairs
or larger groups or they may get depressed
Degu are not aggressive, but may bite if threatened (like most other small animals). Usually, if they are uncomfortable, they will make a noise that sounds something like "WEEP!" They are curious, and not afraid of much.
They normally eat bulbs, tubers, and bark. They can't metabolize glucose, so they are permanently diabetic - never feed a Degu anything containing sugar.
In captivity, Degu live about 5-6 years.
