According to Steven Tipton in Getting Saved From the Sixties, there are four modes of ethical discourse:

  • the authoritative
  • the regular
  • the consequentialist
  • the expressive

    The basic concepts were developed from ideas first expounded by the social ethicist Ralph Potter. Tipton and his colleagues later created some elaborations specific to American culture, which they published in Habits of the Heart.
