box you can hook up to your
BBC microcomputer that lets it receive
teletext broadcasts. Since the
beeb already has a
teletext text mode (aka
MODE 7), this is not as horrible as it could have been. Also,
programs for the BBC were broadcast by the BBC. Of course, the teletext
protocol still had tremendous
latency, and the beeb's
memory wasn't large enough to do significant
caching, so it wasn't that much
fun.
The limitations of the teletext technology, combined with the high price of the adaptor, help explain why it sank faster and deeper than teletext itself.
