In comics, when a story damages the character through awful storytelling or a stupid story, it is declared to be a part of non-continuity. This means that it never existed and no longer has any effect on future stories for that character. What if...? stories are also relegated to non-continuity by their very nature. Elektra: Assassin is an example of a story that was relegated to non-continuity because it affected the character too much for the company's liking. Some comics fans would probably tell you that the Spider-Man clone saga should be declared non-continuity. (It hasn't been.) It is that type of sweeping, character-altering story that normally gets sent to non-continuity.
