In gambling, a negative expectation game is one in which, over a long period of play with a normal distribution of results, one can expect to have less money than one started with.

The percentage difference between the starting amount and the expected amount is referred to as the "house edge". If one is going to play negative expectation games, it's best to minimize the house edge.
