In temperate, thermally stratified lakes, the metalimnion is the middle layer of water (between the epilimnion and hypolimnion), and is where the thermocline is located. In this relatively thin (between 1 and 20 meters) layer of water, temperatures drop from 25-35 degrees celsius to six or seven. This layer is often the zone of the greatest and most interesting biological activity.
