A chromosome which, when stained, produces a banded pattern of alternating light and dark segments (also called a harlequin pattern). It is made by treating a cell with 5'-bromodeoxyuridine; the chemical incorporates into the cell's DNA and when stained is lighter than the DNA around it. (A chromosome is made up of DNA).
