ftpd is a Unix daemon designed to provide FTP services to anyone who has a client. There are various versions of ftpd that have been published under the GPL by most notably the GNU and other authors.
Occasionally buffer overflows will provide a way for crackers to gain root access to a ftp server and execute arbitrary code.
