A coating placed in the naturally occurring pits and fissures of teeth to prevent decay. Usually for the first and second permanent molar tooth. This coating is usually a light-activated flowable resin.
Procedure:
Make sure there's no existing decay in the pits and fissures of the molars.
The enamel of the tooth is etched with 37% orthophosphoric acid for 10 seconds.
The tooth is dried to reveal a frosty appearance of the enamel.
The sealant is flowed into the pits and fissures (grooves) and light cured from 40 seconds.
