"encrypted" is the state of an object once passed through an encryption process. Once encrypted, the object (normally electronic data) is unreadable and must be passed through a decryption process to be again usable. This allows the safe transmission of the encrypted data without the danger of it being intercepted in a usable form by unwanted users. The study of the processes used to encrypt data is known as cryptography.
