Whilst examining the packaging of Dippin' Stix Ranch Dip Fresh Carrots (one of those food products marketed towards young children in order to get them to eat their vegetables), I found an interesting "history of carrots" story that I had never heard.

A Dutch nobleman introduced the carrot to the Anglo-Saxon diet. He presented Queen Elizabeth with two gifts - a tub of native butter and a wreath of tender carrots adorned with diamonds for her to wear in her hair. She kept the jewels and sent the carrots and butter to the kitchen. This is how the dish, carrots and butter, became a classic side dish.

I have never heard of carrots being served with butter.
