The practice of
subverting the electoral processes of an organisation (usually a
political party or
trade union). The branchstacker would recruit a large number of otherwise disinterested
individuals to join the organisation in droves, only for the sake of using their voting rights to help a particular
candidate obtain office. These individuals themselves usually form part of a tight-knit group who might collectively gain some benefit for their time.
It is difficult to legislate against branchstacking, as it is tricky to define what it exactly is, and usually is a private matter within an organisation anyway. All forms of politics is either corrupt, inefficient or dictatorial, so at least with branchstacking you might end up with a pretty Greek Orthodox church or a war veteran's park as a complimentary prize.
