The 1966 movie, directed by James Hill, was a dramatization of Joy Adamson's bestselling book from 1960, her account of how she and her game warden husband raised and then trained a lion cub, Elsa, in Kenya for three years, before returning it to the wild. Virginia McKenna played Adamson in the movie, and was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance. Adamson wrote two sequels, Living Free and Forever Free.
