As opposed to illiteracy, aliteracy is the condition of knowing how to read and write, but choosing not to. This condition appears to be growing more common in the United States as the culture becomes more visually oriented.

In high school I often met people who said things like, "I don’t like reading. I only do it for classes when I have to." Such people are aliterate.
