XGA stands for eXtended Graphics Array. IBM thought this up in the early 90s (1990?), but it never caught on quite as much as it could have, and was soon made obsolete by SVGA. It supported resolutions up to 1024x768 at 8bpp, or 640x480 at 16bpp.
