The original Star Ocean game was released in 1996, but only in Japan. Thankfully, it is available through emulators, and not playing the first game doesn't hinder gameplay for the sequel that we did get in America, Star Ocean 2: The Second Story. Tri-Ace has since made another sequel continuing the Star Ocean 2 storyline, with the same characters, for the Game Boy Color. Unfortunately, this game is also only available in Japan so far.
Star Ocean 2 and Valkyrie Profile have some distinct similarities that have created a definite "feel" for Tri-Ace's games so far, such as the music of Motoi Sakuraba. If they keep this up, they could become a rival for even Squaresoft and their mascot composer Nobuo Uematsu... if they ever get around to releasing anything else in America, that is. (sigh)
