Common
moniker for a transmission sent or recieved by way of
SMS, the
Short Message Service of the
GSM mobile phone standard.
Very popular all over Europe and Asia, texts generally only cost a few pence to send, and normally nothing to recieve. They're limited to 160 characters, but newer Nokias can concatenate three messages, so you can effectively send a 459 character message.
The name has also evolved into a verb: "I texted him to see what they were up to tonight"
