If the talked to are responsive to what I'm saying, all the better, but they don't have to be in order for my chatter to be meaningful. Talking is a way to help me focus on what's going on around me.
So I shout at my computer, I sometimes greet crows, I talk to myself, and when something is really bothering me, I may have a silent monologue with an absent person.
These are not attempts at dialogue, but attempts to get myself to concentrate.
It is a little like prayer, I suppose.
Animism would be my religion.
