Among technical support professionals or any brand of geek helping a non-technical person with a technical issue, Step Zero represents the notional step that should come at the beginning of all troubleshooting procedures: "Make sure the damned thing is plugged in."

Failure to follow this step will often result in embarrassment and shame for either the technically-oriented helper, the non-technically-oriented person being helped, or both.
