In 1974, feeling that service levels had slipped to unacceptable levels, the Santa Fe Railway had withdrawn its permission for Amtrak to use the trademarked name Super Chief on its Chicago-Los Angeles train. Over the next 10 years, things improved on the renamed Southwest Limited, the Santa Fe relented, and the train's name became Southwest Chief on October 28, 1984.
