Solar maximum is the end of the eleven year sunspot cycle. It is a time where there are large numbers of sunspots on the sun. There can be more than a hundred sunspots on the sun. During solar maximum sunspots tend to be near the equator. After this time there is a brief period where ther are virtually no sunspots and then the cycle starts again at solar minimum.
