Snæfellsnes is a 100km long peninsula at mid-Western
Iceland. It is most
famous from the 1466-metre volcano of
Snæfell(*), which is capped by the
glacier of
Snæfellsjökull. The volcano was made famous by
Jules Verne's
adventure
A Journey to the Centre of the Earth, in which it was the
gateway to the
underworld. Mostof the peninsula's population is strung along
the north coast in the villages of
Stykkishólmur,
Grundarfjörur,
Ólafsvík, and
Hellisandur-Rif (*) Not to be confused with Snaefell,
the higest mountain on the Isle of Man (620m).
