Pope St Linus
Birth date not known. Reigned between 64 or 67 and 76 or 79 AD.
Little is known about his life. Various writers have made claims about his life:
-
The "Liber Pontifcalis" asserts that he was born in Tuscany and that his father was Herculanus but there is not other supporting evidence to back up this assertion.
-
It is agreed that he was appointed head of the Church after the death of the apostles St Peter and St Paul.
-
Claims that he was a martyr have been dismissed as Irinaeus designates only Telesphorus as a martyr among the early bishops.
The feast of St Linus is now celebrated on
September 23rd.
