His pioneering work with tape loops influenced even his non-electronic composing; in the 70's, the layered "human loops" of his Music for 18 Musicians earned him a following among the art-rock audience (and maybe caught Robert Fripp's ear - think of Discipline's interlocking ostinati), alongside other accessible composers like Philip Glass, Terry Riley, and Glenn Branca. His studies with a cantor in the 80's led to Tehillim.
