Paan, pān, पान, پان; betel quid

Paan is a general term for various preparations of betel leaf and various garnishes, most often areca nut, tobacco leaf, and lime paste. In South Asia katha paste and mukhwas are common ingredients, added to help freshen the breath. As with other betel preparations, paan is chewed and spit out.

Paan is psychoactive, inducing mild euphoria, and is addictive. Both tobacco and areca nuts are carcinogens, and other adverse health effects have been noted, leading the WHO to include paan by name in its general recommendation that chewing tobacco be banned in India.

Paan remains in common use in India and South Asia, and can be bought pre-made in many stores.
