A cool but little known feature added to
Netscape in version 4.5 (and subsequently dropped in 6.0/
mozilla). It allows your browser preferences, including
bookmarks, address books, history and
cookies, to be stored in a remote server. When Netscape starts up, it fetches the preferences and when it shuts down, it sends them back to the server.
This allows users have one set of preferences, regardless of how many computers they use to access the net. Work, home, client sites, etc., all with the same bookmarks and contacts in the address book.
It even works cross-platform; use Windows at work and Mac or Linux at home? No problem.
Implementation-wise, the prefs are download from either an LDAP directory or simple authenticated HTTP.
