Tan Sri Musa Hitam was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia from July 1981 until February 1986. He resigned his post on 16 March 1989. Musa Hitam is the first Deputy Prime Minister to serve under Dato' Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He was Malaysia's special envoy to the United Nations from 1990 to 1991. And since 1995 has been the Prime Minister's special envoy to the Commonwealth Action Group.

Tan Sri Musa Hitam has just appointed chairman of the Malaysian Human Rights Commission in April 2000.
