A
musical created by
Benny Andersson and
Bjorn Ulvaeus featuring many
Abba songs. It tells the story of 20-year-old
Sophie Sheridan, who lives on a
Greek island in the
taverna run by her mother
Donna Sheridan, and who is about to get married to
Sky. She has found her mother's
diary and read the crucial
dot dot dot passages about three men her mother met on the island twenty-one years ago, each of whom could therefore have been her
father. She invites them all to the
wedding. The
plot unfolds from that, and it is a real plot, with the
songs slotted in smoothly and often in surprising places and
voices.
This smash hit is running at the Prince Edward Theatre in Old Compton Street, London; and has spread across the world.
Its name of course comes from Abba's 1976 hit single Mamma Mia, without an exclamation mark. The chorus of this begins:
Mamma mia, here I go again
My my, how can I resist you?
Mamma mia, does it show again?
