Longus was a poet probably alive in the second century A.D. (though I have read third century as well) and probably lived on the island of Lesbos. He is best known for the 4 parts that comprise the poem Daphnis and Chloe, a beautiful story of the love between two foundlings. Longus follows the imagery and feel of Theocritus pastoral poetry style and mixes it with a love story. This, and the fact he is currently more widely read then Theocritus, is the reason why he is thought of as the creator of the pastoral love image. There is not a lot of information about Longus.
