Karen Hesse was born on August 29, 1952, in Baltimore. Inspired by an encouraging fifth-grade teacher, Karen believed she was "good with words" from the age of ten. It took thirty years for her dream of publication to come true. Along the way, she was a waitress, nanny, librarian, personnel officer, agricultural laborer, advertising secretary, typesetter, proofreader, mental-health-care provider, substitute teacher, and book reviewer. Not all at the same time. In her free moments she was always writing "poems, stories, and books, books, books."
Why does she like writing for kids? Because "children are thoughtful, insightful, smart, funny, generous, compassionate, kind, and wise." She currently lives in southern Vermont. For the low low price of $48.98, you can purchase a Hesse-guided tour of Hesse's hometown. Hesse hesse hesse.
