JEZ'REEL (God sows).

  1. A fortified town in Issachar (Josh. 19:17,18), not far from Gilboa (1 Sam. 31:1-5; 29:1; 2 Sam. 4:4). The Israelites camped near Jezreel just before the battle of Gilboa (1 Sam. 29:1; cp. 2 Sam. 4:4). It was in Jezreel that Jezebel met her death (1 Kings 21:23; 2 Kings 9:10,30-35). The whole central plain about Jezreel is now known as the plain of Esdraelon.
  2. A town in the hill country of Judah (Joshua 15:56).
  3. A descendant of Judah (1 Chr. 4:3).
  4. A son of Hosea the prophet (Hosea 1:4,5).
