The plain of Esdraelon is at once the battlefield and the wheatfield of Palestine. From the ancient battle of Megiddo to Allenby's famous encircling tactics in World War I, history runs; prophecy looks forward to Armageddon, of which the plain of Esdraelon is at least a symbol. The absence of villages or houses on the plain is characteristic of the Orient.
