an attack of recurrent hiccups, usually lasting more than eight hours.

Intractable hiccups are usually a symptom of something else wrong. for example: treatment options for extreme cases include:
  • anti-convulsants
  • chlorpromazine (Thorazine) and haloperidol (Haldol)
  • cutting the phrenic nerve
Chronic hiccups can result in dehydration, weight loss, insomnia, and fatigue, due to inability to eat, and sleep.
