when I was in rehab

I made the mistake

one day

of saying

I never asked to be born you know

and I say mistake

because when you're in rehab

and you say something like

I never asked to be born you know

the people who work at the rehab love it

because they get to say

well no one asks to be born you know

but that’s just my point

I didn’t decide

it wasn’t my choice

I was an accident for all I know

but you say that in rehab

and you get a look

a look and a shrug

and I bet you a quarter

somebody says

life is hard and then you die

well no shit it’s hard 

you come kicking and screaming

and you leave the same way

unless you get lucky and die in your sleep

so if I’m only here

by some mistake

or because of a choice that I didn’t make

since I never asked to be born you know

when I end up in rehab

for the second or sixth

or twenty-sixth time

don’t fucking come there on visiting day

wringing your hands

and that look on your face

if that’s all you’ve got and the best that you have

if life is hard and then you die

tell me this and look in my eye

why the fuck would anyone ask to be born.
