A restriction enzyme which cuts DNA wherever it sees the following nucleotide sequence:
5' AAGCTT 3'
3' TTCGAA 5'
The enzyme cuts the DNA between the two A's on each strand (it makes a staggered cut). The Hind III enzyme was originally found in the bacterium Hemophilus influenzae.
